Initially, a removable denture can look esthetically attractive and natural. The denture is less costly than non-removable solutions, such as bridges and dental implants. For some patients, because of physical health or economics, it is only option available to them.

Research and technology make it possible to produce dentures that look better, feel better, and last longer. In the same comfortable and comforting environment where thousands of permanent smiles have lighted faces, patients requiring dentures can now select from a full menu of removable dentitions.

Removable dentures are simply an interim solution for many patients. Due to the problems described below, many patients eventually opt to pursue dental implant treatment.

Disadvantages of
Removable Dentures

• Continuously causes bone loss.

• Long term esthetics- Bone loss creates changes to the face and appearance of the mouth, jaw, and chin, often referred to as "bite collapse".

• Collapse of the lower third of the face accelerates the aging process by increasing the number of pronounced wrinkles around the mouth.

• Movement of denture can irritate or ulcerate the underlying gum tissue.

• Chronic irritation from denture movement can cause soft tissue hyperplasia (excess tissue growth).

• Bone deteriorates under denture due to loss of tooth roots.

• Long term function - Dentures can become loose and uncomfortable as time progresses.

• Some patients experience gagging and discomfort due to the presence of the denture material covering the roof of mouth or under the tongue.

• Speech - Some patients experience difficulty with speech due to the presence of the denture in the mouth.

• Taste - Dentures can interfere with taste and enjoyment of food.

• Chewing function is only 25% as efficient as natural or permanent teeth. Therefore, denture wearers experience a 75% decrease in function efficiency.

• Adjustments and frequent refittings are necessary, adding to the cost of maintenance.

• Metal clasps that are attached to anchor dentures may be visible when patient smiles.

• Metal clasps may damage the healthy surrounding teeth.

• Ill fitting dentures can compromise a patient's nutrition.

• Denture odor.

• Loss of denture when on vacation or in hospital.
